To become wildly satisfied clients, they need to see major results — and fast. Helping your clients to get quick relief increases their confidence in you as a practitioner and also their faith in their own ability to feel better and be truly well. I have written before about various causes of insomnia and how they can be supported quickly and effectively.

Biochemically, there are two key processes which our clients must master each night in order to sleep well:. When we expose our brains at night to full-spectrum light — which mimics daylight — the pineal gland secretes less melatonin which can delay or prevent sleep.

This includes TV and computer screens. Encourage your clients to choose only dim-light, relaxing activities in the evening, especially the full hours prior to bedtime e. Most people have no idea how much they might be impairing their sleep by doing email or searching the web for a couple of hours leading right up to bedtime.

These simple things matter! So many of our clients are desperate for sleep. And unfortunately end up turning to highly-addictive sleep medications which can present major drug withdrawal challenges down the road. Give them a reliable alternative. Help them to address the true root cause of their challenges. And watch how quickly they become wildly satisfied with your support!

If you know that healthcare must be transformed to be sustainable and effective, and you believe strongly that Functional Medicine is key to making that happen, we urge you to learn about our semester program.

Like us on Facebook to get more great clinical tips and to get notifications of my next Facebook Live! I am working with a college student who is experiencing episodes of insomnia due to high levels of stress. I have introduced Mag-Mind, as well as, taurine, however they do not seem to be helping him.

Melatonin is not effective either. He is in an apartment by himself so he is able to cook healthy meals and is not exposed to loud noise from roommates. Currently, he cannot get his body to fall asleep until 4am and then he wakes naturally by 8am. I am suspicious of possible adrenal fatigue, either too high or too low cortisol levels.

My next step would be to introduce L-theanine and see how that works. He had basic blood work in August by a primary care doctor. That was another time when he experienced a 2 week period of insomnia. Nothing appeared out of sorts. Basic Thyroid panel was normal but it did not test for antibodies. Is there a better combination of supplements that would help him fall asleep at a normal hour?

Alas, we cannot provide advice on specific client cases in this venue. One of the most underestimated and under-utilized natural food supplements I have recommended to my patients over the past 35 years is an amino acid derivative known as N-A-C N-Acetyl-Cysteine.

Why underestimated? Well, even naturopaths seldom recommend it and most people who take natural food supplements have never even heard of it. N-A-C is a form of the essential amino acid cysteinesomething used by the body to make glutathione GSHone of the body's most important antioxidants.

The major impact of N-A-C is on the immune systemliver protection, detoxification, and cardiovascular health. We all badly need its anti-inflammatory protection. Read more about inflammation. N-A-C modulates the expression of genes that affect the inflammatory process.

It inhibits the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines, suppresses NF-kappa B and regulates the gene for COX-2 thereby preventing inflammation and pain. These chemicals are involved in hundreds of inflammatory conditions and diseases. In other words, N-A-C is anti-inflammatory and can either blunt or reverse chronic inflammatory conditions.

N-A-C prevents LDL-cholesterol "bad" cholesterol from being oxidized and causing inflammatory damage to the blood vessels. N-A-C lowers the levels of homocysteine, which prevents the buildup of plaque in the arteries. The lower the homocysteine, the less likelihood of arterial blockage. N-A-C is also effective at lowering the blood levels of lipoprotein a Lp athought by many scientists to be a more accurate predictor of cardiovascular disease than blood levels of cholesterol.

N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC) The best supplement you can take?

Diet changes and drugs do not lower Lp a anywhere as well as N-A-C. N-A-C also improves insulin resistance and will improve metabolic syndrome, diabetes, and hypoglycemia. GSH is vital for optimal T and B-lymphocyte function. One would think it might be a good idea to supplement the body with GSH, but the major problem here is that GSH is not absorbed intact from the gastrointestinal tract.

Oral GSH supplementation is destroyed and inactivated by stomach acid. N-A-C is not. Aside from viruses, N-A-C protects the body from numerous pollutants, drugs, microbes and toxic heavy metals like mercury. N-A-C is mucolytic which means that it breaks up heavy and sticky mucous that can build up in conditions such as sinusitis, asthma, bronchitis, pneumonia, and cystic fibrosis. N-A-C is therefore indispensable in any condition that involves excessive mucous.

Evidence exists that N-A-C blocks the progression of most cancers and could be taken with chemotherapy to improve treatment outcomes. N-A-C protects the body from many different toxins because of its content of sulfhydryl groups that can bind and inactivate herbicides, mercury, cadmium, lead, other toxic heavy metals, drugs like acetaminophen, environmental pollutants, microbes like E.Log in or Sign up.

JamesMay 4, Messages: 2, Likes Received: 13, Do not take with abxs or nitroglycerine or consult a doctor if you have diabetes or kidney stones. My brain feels very calm, but I'm feeling quite exhausted so not sure if it's from taking the supplements. I think I will stop on the weekend to see how I feel. I'm taking it at am, pm and pm. MijMay 4, Louie41Invisible Woman and adambeyoncelowe like this. I usually take one just before I go to bed.

If my lungs are particularly bunged up I might add a second dose in the early afternoon, but I never do that for more than a few days because I find it dries my lungs out too much. Arnie PyeMay 4, Adult Dosage Take 1 capsule three times daily with protein-containing meals, or as directed by a qualified health care practitioner.

Cautions Do not use if you are taking nitroglycerin or antibiotics. Consult a health care practitioner prior to use if have kidney stones, diabetes or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Invisible Woman how are you doing on the NAC?It becomes essential only when the dietary intake of methionine and serine is low. Cysteine is found in most high-protein foods, such as chicken, turkey, yogurt, cheese, eggs, sunflower seeds and legumes.

Consuming adequate cysteine and NAC is important for a variety of health reasons — including replenishing the most powerful antioxidant in your body, glutathione. These amino acids also help with chronic respiratory conditions, fertility and brain health. Along with two other amino acids — glutamine and glycine — NAC is needed to make and replenish glutathione.

Some researchers believe it may even contribute to longevity 1. Its antioxidant properties are also important for combatting numerous other ailments caused by oxidative stress, such as heart disease, infertility and some psychiatric conditions 2.

It can help prevent side effects of drugs and environmental toxins 3. In fact, doctors regularly give intravenous IV NAC to people with an acetaminophen overdose to prevent or reduce kidney and liver damage 4. NAC also has applications for other liver diseases due to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits 5.

NAC helps regulate levels of glutamate — the most important neurotransmitter in your brain 6. While glutamate is required for normal brain action, excess glutamate paired with glutathione depletion can cause brain damage.

This may contribute to mental health conditions, such as bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, obsessive-compulsive disorder OCD and addictive behavior 78.

N-Acetyl Cysteine

For people with bipolar disease and depression, NAC may help decrease symptoms and improve your overall ability to function. Likewise, an animal study implied that NAC may minimize negative effects of schizophrenia, such as social withdrawal, apathy and reduced attention spans NAC supplements can also help decrease withdrawal symptoms and prevent relapse in cocaine addicts 12 Additionally, preliminary studies show that NAC may decrease marijuana and nicotine use and cravings 14 Many of these disorders have limited or currently ineffective treatment options.

NAC may be an effective aid for individuals with these conditions NAC can relieve symptoms of respiratory conditions by acting as an antioxidant and expectorant, loosening mucus in your air passageways. As an antioxidant, NAC helps replenish glutathione levels in your lungs and reduces inflammation in your bronchial tubes and lung tissue. People with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease COPD experience long-term oxidative damage and inflammation of lung tissue, which causes airways to constrict — leading to shortness of breath and coughing.

By thinning mucus in your bronchial tubes and boosting glutathione levels, NAC may help decrease the severity and frequency of wheezing, coughing and respiratory attacks In addition to relieving COPD and bronchitis, NAC may improve other lung and respiratory tract conditions like cystic fibrosis, asthma and pulmonary fibrosis, as well as symptoms of nasal and sinus congestion due to allergies or infections The brain neurotransmitter glutamate is involved in a broad range of learning, behavior and memory actions, while the antioxidant glutathione helps reduce oxidative damage to brain cells associated with aging 6.

Because NAC helps regulate glutamate levels and replenish glutathione, it may benefit those with brain and memory ailments 4. Both oxidative damage to cells and a decrease in antioxidant ability contribute to this disease. NAC supplements appear to improve both dopamine function and disease symptoms such as tremors 4. While NAC may improve brain healthmore human research is needed to make strong conclusions.NAC benefits both the brain and body, which is why it has been in use as a supplement for decades.

In clinical trials, supplementation with NAC is effective for treatment of a variety of health problems. Glutathione is the primary antioxidant in the lungs. The optimal dose of NAC is mg two to three times a day. Oral NAC supplements are safe and generally well tolerated, although they may infrequently cause diarrheanausea, and vomiting.

In addition to being of paramount importance in maintaining healthy lung tissue, glutathione is the principle antioxidant in the brain. NAC is also, as you learned above, able to modulate levels of the important neurotransmitter glutamate in the brain.

Both glutathione depletion and abnormal glutamate neurotransmission have been found in a number of mental health conditions and nervous system disorders, including bipolar disorderschizophreniaobsessive-compulsive disorder, pathological gambling, and cocaine dependence. Thank you! One question, how does it compare to an oxaloacetate supplement,or are they the same? Thanks again. Appreciate this update as there were studies on mice that seemed less than positive.

I have suffered acute bronchitis for many years, and coupled with colds and flu, have been rendered physically wrecked. In the last 12 months, i have taken n. Day one of taking this supplement, i awoke the next day and my sinuses cleared completely. I have noticed an increase in physical stamina, well being, and mood. I have been a heavy smoker for decades, and was diagnosed with borderline copd. I also consume 12mg of Boron daily, and i no longer suffer with stiff joints and mild arthiritis.

There have been a couple of friends that reported no difference to their health at all. I have read that this may be because they already have sufficient levels of glutathione in their system! My eyes watered, his were dry…we started taking NAC and our respective problems cleared up. Both are due to the same thing: inflammation of eye duct. We take NAC for other things as well but we were elated that it cleared up these small but super annoying problems. I have been on before, but because of tummy aches stopped, but am so concerned with lack of deep breathing efforts am retrying it……I pray it helps me, I have COPD, Histo and Fibro….

Been taking NAC along with vitamin C for several years now. It has really helped with the mucin NOT the same as mucus so many hypothyroid patients have, myself included. I have had asthma all my life. After my 3rd pulmonary embolism inI was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis and I read that people usually die within 5 years. My specialist has me on blood thinners, prednisone and other steroids that I inhale daily.

October I decided to go with natural treatment and was introduced to Green House Herbal Clinic natural organic idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis Herbal formula, i had a total decline of symptoms with this pulmonary fibrosis Herbal formula treatment.N-Acetylcysteine -- abbreviated NAC -- is a supplement derived from a protein-building amino acid called cysteine. This supplement may also improve lung function in people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disorders or bronchitis, although clear evidence supporting the purported uses of NAC supplements is lacking.

Talk with your primary medical provider about the side effects of NAC supplements before beginning treatment. The most common side effects associated with orally-administered NAC supplements are stomach-related. You may feel nauseated, vomit or develop diarrhea or constipation, RxList warns. These side effects may contribute to loss of appetite, stomach cramps or bloating.

Avoid taking this supplement on an empty stomach to limit or prevent stomach irritation. If stomach discomfort persists, seek additional care from your physician. Irritated patches of skin may appear across your body as a side effect following treatment with NAC supplements.

NAC Side Effects

Skin rash side effects may be bothersome and may cause itching, peeling or flaking of the affected skin region. Contact your medical provider immediately if you develop hives, excessive swelling or intense itching, as these side effects may be signs of an allergic reaction to NAC supplements. Increased fatigue may negatively affect your ability to remain alert and attentive during your daily activities.

If fatigue becomes bothersome, consult your doctor. Your blood pressure may drop as a side effect of taking this type of supplement. Low blood pressure -- also called hypotension -- may cause symptoms of headache, dizziness or fatigue. If you feel dizzy, remain seated until this sensations passes to prevent further injury from falling down or tripping.

NAC Benefits: Helps Lung Problems, Addictions, Autism, Bipolar, and More

Talk with your physician if dizziness does not subside. A severe allergic reaction, called an anaphylactoid reaction, may occur after initial treatment with NAC supplements, Drugs.

An anaphylactoid reaction may result in severe breathing problems, difficulty swallowing, facial swelling, hives, weakness, dizziness or pale skin. Seek emergency medical care if you exhibit any of these symptoms after taking a NAC supplement. In the absence of prompt medical intervention, an anaphylactoid reaction may be fatal. Be sure to discuss any medications you are currently taking with your medical provider before you begin treatment with NAC supplement.

Concomitant use of NAC supplements and nitroglycerine may cause a severe drop in your blood pressure and may increase your risk of experiencing headache pain and lightheadedness, MSKCC reports.

Additionally, the efficacy of activated charcoal may diminish if you take it in conjunction with a NAC supplement. Has anyone tried this during withdrawal? Does it help any symptoms? I've read about it on the other forum but have never got round to trying it, mostly because I'm scared of potentially feeling worse I feel bad enough as it is. I wonder if it would help sleep or to reduce rumination, as I've read it is used for OCD.

If it would help reduce some of my negative thoughts I'd be glad to try it. Acetylcysteine has been shown to reduce the symptoms of both schizophrenia[21] and bipolar disorder[22] in two placebo controlled trials conducted at Melbourne University. It is thought to act via modulation of NMDA glutamate receptors or by increasing glutathione.

Replicatory trials in bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and depression are underway. N-Acetylcysteine aka acetylcysteine or NAC may help subdue the hyperactivity of the glutamate system that causes the withdrawal symptoms of insomnia, pseudo-anxiety, and pseudo-depression, excessive cortisol production and the awful sensations of autonomic dumping; also, the symptoms of OCD triggered in some of us by withdrawal. NAC helps break down mucus, which might help me. It also contributes to the production of glutathione, the master anti-oxidant although this is self-limiting.

Existing medications for obsessive-compulsive disorder affect the neurotransmitters serotonin or dopamine; but increasing evidence suggests that functional disruptions of a different neurotransmitter, glutamate, may contribute to some cases of OCD.

We are therefore interested in using medications that target glutamate as novel treatment options for those OCD patients who do not benefit from established treatments.

One such medication is the drug N-Acetylcysteine, whose glutamatergic antagonistic properties may be effective in reducing the glutamatergic hyperactivity that is thought to contribute to the pathophysiology of OCD and MDD Pittenger are attached to the study proposal.

Also inI talked to a knowledgeable doctor about NAC. Dosage is an issue, and here's why as he explained it : The glutamatergic and GABA systems are complementary.

When they are in tune, everything works well. Glutamate is one of those things, like cortisol, where too little is bad and too much is bad but just right is just right. If GABA is reduced, the glutamatergic system gets out of hand.

Any which way, you get symptoms of anxiety and agitation. The right glutamategic-correcting dosage of NAC might even vary from person to person. This doctor knew exactly how NAC acted on the glutamate system and said its mode of action was different from lamotrigine and it might be complementary to Lamictal. My guess is it could be used to taper people off lamotrigine.
